Learn Visual Capture

It all started when…

I was in Beijing facilitating a strategy session.

And we just received news that the lead client was now able to join!

Yes! Everyone was so happy at this last minute change, but there was a problem: we didn’t have translation services and half of the room didn’t speak Mandarin. And the client was ready to talk for about an hour.

It was invaluable time with her, but we weren’t set up for it. So what could we do?

I grabbed a few markers.

Set up a few flimsy flip charts on easels in front of the group.

And explained how I would draw out what the client was going to say, in real time (well, almost real time- if someone could translate the key points into my ear).

Which is exactly what we did.

Visuals are universal.

They help us communicate when words fail. But words + visuals? That is (scientifically) the strongest way to capture, share, and remember information.

And that’s what visual capture is all about: listening and simplifying what you hear down onto the page with strategic visuals and synthesized words. Created on an iPad, with markers on a whiteboard, or using flimsy flip charts and markers: the practice has the same foundations.
